Video is taking over the world and the statistics are really staggering.

Forbes reports that there’s been more videos produced in the last 30 days than the television networks have produced in the last 30 years. In a recent interview with Chris McCabe, an Amazon Merchant consultant, I talk about what makes video marketing successful in today’s competitive online e-commerce environment.

I made my first video in 1984 and have used video marketing to help brand and sell many direct to consumer products like, Sonicare, The George Foreman Grill, OxiClean and GoPro.

The content of your product videos and what you can do both visually and in the dialogue for both Amazon and off Amazon will help make your efforts more successful.

Video and content marketing in addition to Amazon is great a way to build your brand and increase traffic to your seller page. I gave a keynote talk at the Prosper Show a few years ago about how to produce videos and showcase products that encourage a consumer response. One of the key points discussed was to keep in mind that there is a lot of competition on Amazon and margins are thin, and that is why you need to broaden your scope online. Good product videos will help increase conversion.

Amazon sellers need to diversity their marketing and go beyond the platform. Think of it as one of many distribution channels. You want to protect your business from changes and to grow your sales online. Be active and involved in other marketing channels — you don’t want to put all of your eggs in one basket.

Get all of the information that you can — knowledge is key. I educate people specifically on video production on how to take this internally, but if you’re not able to do so I also explain how to hire the right person or company who is able to deliver what you need.

I’ve had a lot of success integrating video production with direct response principles over the last 30 years and I can tell you now that the world of video marketing today is very exciting. The video part of both on Amazon and off is going to keep expanding and growing. The more you can start using it the more ahead of the competition you will be.
